McCormack (Mary Ellen) Public Housing Development is dedicated.
September 11, 1938
Architect: Joseph Leland. The Seventeen Associated Architects. Originally Old Harbor Village, it is located at 10 Kemp Street. The first federally-funded public housing development in the U.S., it is dedicated before a crowd of 10,000 people. Construction proceeded after an unsuccessful court suit by residents that only local and state government – and not the federal government- could take land by eminent domain. More than 10,000 people apply for tenancy in the development, which is subsequently renamed for the mother of John McCormack, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Current plans call for a major renovation and expansion in the development to be completed in 2043.
